A traditional Russian folk song originally sung by burlaks (barge haulers) on the Volga River.

First collected and published in 1866 by composer Mily Balakirev.

Known in Russian as “Эй, ухнем!” (Ey, ukhnyem!), meaning “Yo, heave-ho!”.

Popularized internationally by legendary bass singer Feodor Chaliapin.

Later adapted into jazz; Glenn Miller’s 1941 arrangement reached #1 in the U.S. charts
