The Lost Chord is a song composed by Arthur Sullivan in 1877 while he was at the bedside of his brother Fred Sullivan, who was gravely ill. The lyrics were originally a poem titled "A Lost Chord" by Adelaide Anne Procter, published in 1860.
The song became an instant success and was particularly associated with American contralto Antoinette Sterling, as well as British contralto Clara Butt. Sullivan himself was proud of the composition and later remarked, "I have composed much music since then, but have never written a second Lost Chord."
It remains one of Sullivan’s best-known songs, performed and recorded by many famous singers.
