This is a duet that creates a lonely, melancholy feeling with its simple melody and plaintive countermelody. The song, also called in some versions, Ten Thousand Miles From Home, expresses the loneliness of British convicts transported to a place far from their native home to live out a hard life in a desolate land without any hope of ever seeing family and friends again.
